Spouse Visa
A UK spouse visa allows individuals who are married to a British citizen or settled person to join or accompany their partner to the UK.
Applicants must demonstrate:
- a genuine and subsisting relationship
- that the financial requirement is met
- suitable accommodation in the UK
- English language ability
A spouse visa can lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after five years.
Unmarried Partner Visa
If you are in a long-term relationship but not married, you may be eligible for an unmarried partner visa.
Applicants usually need to show that they have lived together in a relationship similar to marriage for at least two years. The remaining requirements are similar to the Spouse visa.
This route allows couples to live together in the UK and can also lead to settlement.
Fiancé Visa
A UK fiancé visa allows individuals to travel to the UK to marry their partner.
This visa allows you to:
- enter the UK to marry your British or settled partner
- live together in the UK during the visa period
After the marriage takes place, you can switch to a UK spouse visa to remain in the UK.

Yes. A UK fiancé visa allows you to travel to the UK to marry your partner. After the marriage takes place, you can apply to switch to a spouse visa.
Can I apply for a UK spouse visa if we are living outside the UK?
Yes. Many couples apply while living overseas so they can relocate to the UK together. The application is normally submitted from outside the UK.
How long does a UK spouse visa last?
An initial spouse visa is normally granted for 2 years and 9 months. After this period you can apply for an extension and later Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).
What is the income requirement for a UK spouse visa?
Applicants must normally meet the minimum income requirement set by the Home Office. This can usually be met through employment income, savings or a combination of both.
