Who Needs a UK Medical Visitor Visa?

You must apply for a UK Medical Visitor Visa if you:

  • Are from a visa national country and need to travel to the UK for private medical treatment.
  • Require private medical treatment in the UK.
  • Are an organ donor for a family member or close friend in the UK.

If you are from a non-visa national country, you do not need a visa in advance, but you must meet all medical visitor requirements when entering the UK.

What You Can and Cannot Do on a UK Medical Visitor Visa

You can:

  • Receive private medical treatment at a UK hospital or clinic.
  • Act as an organ donor for a family member or close friend.
  • Stay in the UK for up to six months (or up to 11 months with an approved extension).

You cannot:

  • Receive treatment from the NHS (only private treatment is allowed).
  • Work in the UK, including paid or unpaid jobs.
  • Study for more than 30 days.
  • Extend your visa beyond 11 months.
  • Claim public funds or benefits.

Required Documents for a UK Medical Visitor Visa

To apply for a UK Medical visa, you should provide:

  • A valid passport (with at least one blank page).
  • A letter from a UK doctor or medical specialist, confirming:
    • Your medical condition and required treatment.
    • The estimated duration and cost of treatment.
    • Where the treatment will take place.
  • Proof of ability to pay for treatment and living expenses, such as bank statements or a sponsorship letter.
  • Accommodation details (hotel booking, proof of stay with family).
  • Return travel details (flight bookings or itinerary).

If applying as an organ donor, you must also provide:

  • A letter from a UK hospital confirming the transplant procedure.
  • Proof of relationship with the recipient.
  • Medical tests confirming you are a suitable donor.

Additional documents may be required based on your country of residence and visa history.

How to Apply for a UK Medical Visitor Visa

Step 1: Complete the Online Application

  • Apply via the official UK government website.
  • Select the Standard Visitor Visa – Medical Treatment option.

Step 2: Pay the Visa Fee

  • Visa application fee (up to six months): £127
  • Visa application fee (up to 11 months for extended treatment): £220
  • Priority processing fee (optional): £500 for faster decision

Step 3: Book a Biometric Appointment

  • Attend a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in your home country.
  • Provide fingerprints and a photograph.
