The UK Dependant Visa allows family members of individuals holding or applying for various work visas to join them in the UK. This includes the Worker routes (previously Tier 2) like the Skilled Worker visa, Temporary Worker routes (previously Tier 5), and visas for Innovators, Global Talent migrants, and those with UK Ancestry visas.
Who Can Apply for a UK Dependant Visa?
To qualify for a UK Dependent Visa, you must be a dependant family member of a qualifying migrant. The UK Immigration Rules define a ‘dependant’ as:
- A spouse, civil partner, or unmarried/same-sex partner.
- A child under 18 years old at the time of application.
Spouses and partners must either be:
- Married to or in a civil partnership with someone in the UK on a relevant visa, or
- Applying for a visa simultaneously with the main applicant.
Unmarried or same-sex partners must prove a genuine relationship akin to marriage for at least two years.
Children can apply if:
- Both parents are applying for entry clearance simultaneously, or
- Both parents are already in the UK, and the child is joining them, or
- One parent is already in the UK, and the other is applying for entry clearance along with the child.
Children applying with only one parent must meet specific conditions, such as the parent being the only surviving parent or having sole responsibility for the child’s upbringing.
What Are the Requirements for a UK Dependant Visa?
UK Dependent visa applicants must:
- Prove their identity
- Prove their relationship with the main applicant
- Intend to live with their sponsor in the UK for the visa duration
- Have sufficient funds to support themselves without public funds
UK Dependent Visa Financial Requirement
The UK Dependant visa requires the family to support themselves financially without relying on public funds.
For instance, a Skilled Worker visa applicant must show £285 in savings for a dependent partner, £315 for the first dependent child, and £200 for each additional child. If an A-rated Skilled Worker Sponsor Licence holder certifies these funds, proof of funds may not be necessary.
What Documents Do I Need to Provide to Apply for a UK PBS Dependant Visa?

- A passport or other valid travel document
- Marriage or Birth Certificate
- Bank statements
- Evidence of relationship with the main applicant
- Tuberculosis test results (if applicable)
- Criminal record check (if applicable)

What Are the Advantages of a UK Dependant Visa?
UK dependant visa holders can work (with some restrictions) and study in the UK. Children can attend state or private schools. After a qualifying period, visa dependents may be eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).
Fees for Skilled Worker dependants are as follows:
- 3-year visa: £719 (outside the UK), £827 (inside the UK)
- 5-year visa: £1,420 (outside the UK), £1,636 (inside the UK)
- Immigration Salary List: £551 (3 years), £1,084 (5 years) – inside and outside the UK
